Your design or ours

Some people arrive with a picture, a Pinterest board or a sketch on the back of an envelope and know exactly what they want. We will build that.

Other people know the closet does not work and cannot say why. That is fine too. We measure, ask what actually goes in there, and lay it out. The questions are simple and they change everything: how much long hanging do you need for coats and dresses, how much double hanging for shirts and folded trousers, how many drawers, does anything need to be reachable by a child, and how many pairs of shoes are we really talking about.

Nobody needs the same closet. A closet built for someone with forty shirts and six pairs of shoes is a bad closet for someone with six shirts and forty pairs.

Why built beats bought

Kit systems come in fixed widths. Your closet does not. So a kit either leaves a dead strip at one end, or stops short of the ceiling, or both, and that gap is exactly the storage you were short of in the first place.

Built-in shelving is cut to the opening. It runs wall to wall. It goes to full height, which turns the top eighteen inches, the part that is currently holding dust and a suitcase, into real shelf space. It turns the corner properly in a walk-in instead of dying six inches from it.

The walk-in in our recent work is that idea: full-height shelving, cubbies sized for what actually goes in them, and hanging rods at two heights so the vertical space is not wasted.

Reach-ins, walk-ins and the rest

A reach-in bedroom closet is the most common and the most badly used. One rod and one shelf is usually about half the storage the space could hold. Double-hanging one side alone often gets you most of the way there.

Walk-ins are about circulation. There has to be room to stand and turn without a shelf corner in your back, and the layout should put the things you use daily where you can reach them without going in.

Then there is everything that is not a bedroom: pantries, linen closets, mudroom cubbies with a bench and hooks, garage shelving, laundry room storage. All the same trade, all built to the wall rather than bought in a box.

Materials and finish

Most closets get built in painted MDF or plywood shelving, which is what the finished white systems people like are made from, and it holds a clean paint finish. Where a shelf is going to carry weight, it gets proper support so it does not bow into a smile after two winters of storing books.

Rods get supported at the right intervals for the span. A long rod with a bracket only at each end will sag under a row of winter coats.

What it costs

Price is by the size of the closet and how much of it is shelving, drawers and specialty storage versus plain rod and shelf. A reach-in refit is a modest job. A full walk-in with drawers and shoe storage is a bigger one. Either way we measure, lay it out, and give you a price before we cut anything.

Doing more than one closet at a time is meaningfully better value, because the setup and the material run happen once. If the whole house has bad closets, do them together.
